The religious celebrations of the Week of
Easter begin at sunset on Easter Thursday
with the suggestive procession of the twelve
Hooded Apostles, organized
by the most ancient brotherhood of the island,
the "Bianchi’s”, founded
in 1583 by the Cardinal Innico D'Avalos
of Aragon.
The first part is held in one of the thirteen
churches of the island where the twelve
brothers first put on their brotherhood
habits and then celebrate the ritual of
the Washing of the Feet.
Once the religious function has finished,
the apostles put their hoods up and, with
a cross on their shoulders and a crown of
thorns on their heads, they march through
the roads of the island escorted by the
figure of the "centurione" (centurion),
by the master of cerimonies and by the other
members of the brotherhood who walk in single
file holding large candles.
The procession foresees a visit to the SS.
Sacrament exposed in the different churches
along the way.
At the end of the procession, in the sacristy
of the church which has been chosen, the
last Supper is reenacted: the apostles,
sat alongside a long table, eat a meal of
vegetables, roasted fish, lamb, unleavened
bread and wine.
