Positioned in front of Capri
and between Punta Pizzaco and Punta dei
Monaci is the basin of Chiaia, with its
dark sand and shallow water. It is certainly
the first of the beaches to be reached by
the sun and also the beach which is most
sheltered from the northwest afternoon wind
and from the flow of tourists who are not
always prepared to face the 186 stairs to
get there.
Because of its length the people of Procida
tend to distinguish between Chiaia and Chiaiozza
by pointing out that Chiaozza is the strip
of beach under “Via dei Bagni”,
a tiny road with some ramps that is the
only alternative for whoever does not want
to go down the aforesaid stairs.
The facilities of the three bathing establishments
are numerous. One of these establishments,
the “Conchiglia” is, without
doubt, also one of the best restaurants
on the island because of its position and
because of the high standard of food. Above
all, this restaurant is for people who have
a preference for romantic candlelight dinners
accompanied by the sea and the moon…

It is
possible to admire the enchanting scenery
of Chiaia not only from Terra Murata and
Corricella, but also from Punta Pizzaco
which you can get to by two paths. The first,
“Via Raia”, is full of maritime
pines, poplars and trees of heaven and offers
people an extraordinary view of the whole
bay.
The second, “Pizzaco”, takes
you for a long walk among bushes of lentiscus,
euphorbia, myrtle, agaves and numerous fig
trees and leads to one of the most absolutely
beautiful places on the island. This is
almost a small part of heaven and is a popular
destination for tourists, lovers of nature,
solitude and clear sea.
In the summer, despite the presence of numerous
boats moored to the beach, the tranquility
of the place seems guaranteed by the “spirit”
of Elsa Morante who, after having ambientated
one of the greatest masterpieces of nineteenth-century
Italian literature in Procida, requested
that her ashes be thrown into this very
sea after her death.
