The island of Procida belongs to the archipelago
of the Neapolitan islands along with Ischia
and Capri.
It is situated between the Gulf of Naples,
Ischia and Capo Miseno and it can be reached
from Naples (distance: around 13 miles),
Pozzuoli (distance: around 7 miles) and
Ischia (distance: around 2 miles).
Its surface area is about 4 square kilometers,
but it is inhabited by around 11.000 inhabitants
(Procidani) so that it has been decreed
the most densely populated island in Europe.

Procida
is connected to the islet of Vivara in the
west, by a bridge.
Vivara has a surface area of 0.32 square
kilometers and reaches its maximum height
above sea level with a high ground of 109
meters.
Vivara is a protected oasis and all the
typical Mediterranean vegetation is present
in it. Vivara is connected to Procida by
a bridge that, because of its currently
being unsafe, obstructs visits.
Of volcanic origin, Procida is the site
of now partly corroded ancient craters in
the inlets of Chiaiolella, of Carbonchio
and Pozzo Vecchio.

The proximity of Procida,
like Ischia, to the Campi Flegrei allows
us to presume that its geological age actually
coincides with the origin of "fire
earth", which is the ground which can
be found in vast zones of Campania, constituted
by yellow and grey “tufo”(tuff)
and lava of basaltic nature.
Eruptive demonstrations in Procida actually
date back as far as medieval times, feeding
the myth of the giant called “Mimante”
that sleeps under the island.
Procida reaches its maximum height at 91
meters above sea level with the promontory
of Terra Murata.
The coasts are tall cliffs but they are
alternated with bays and beaches between
the prominences of Punta dei Monaci and
Punta Pizzaco, Punta della Lingua, Punta
Pizzaco and Punta Socciaro.
