One of the most popular tourist hotspots
is surely Marina Chiaiolella
(from the word spiaggiolella, which means
small beach) which is not only the most
well-known landing place for tourists, but
also the busiest long beach thanks to the
shallow water which goes for hundreds of
meters, and which makes it a privileged
destination for young people and families.
Once, this place was destined to be farm
land. It was only in the 18th century, following
the strong demographic expansion, that Marina
Chiaiolella underwent an architectual development
similar to that of other harbours, as it
is possible to admire walking along the
dock.
The most
meaningful building is the Sanctuary of
St. Giuseppe (1836) with its rosy bell tower
and with the great round clock which is
on all the sides of the bell tower.
The splendid harbour, a place for landing
and mooring for hundreds of boats, is dominated
in the east by the towering promontory of
Santa Margherita Vecchia, which in the 8th
century entertained a certain Cenobio Benedettino,
and in the west by the high ground of Solchiaro,
once a destination chosen by nobles for
hunting and beating.
The little harbour, constituted by the crater
of a submerged volcano, is characterized
by the presence of numerous bars and restaurants
that are the evening entertainment for the
island - especially in summer.
Historically,
seeing as the length of the beach that connects
Punta Serra with S. Margherita Vecchia at
Chiaiolella is so long, the Procidani have
always wanted to distinguish between Ciraccio
and Ciracciello, pointing out that Ciracciello
is the body of sea adjacent to the waterfront
of what is today known as lungomare Cristoforo
Colombo. To mark the borders of the two
beaches there are two small tuff stacks
which were connected to the coast by a natural
arch until up to about a year ago. Anyway,
all places of the strand offer the visitor
a fabulous, romantic sunset over Ischia
and Vivara.
