It is not only the most beautiful place
in Procida.
It is to be sure, one of the most beautiful
places in the world!
The sweetest, most seductive, most romantic
harbour. It’s a different world. An
appointment with silence, poetry, love!
It is the refuge everybody dreams about.
Loved by writers, poets, artists. It was
in this very open air nativity scene that
the unforgettable Massimo Troisi chose to
set his famous film:
“Il Postino” (The Postman).
Pink, yellow, white, green and red are the
colours that predominate in this place -
a fishermen's village, built like an amphitheatre
on the sea and surrounded by nets all around
the wharf.
Opinions
differ about the etymology of the name:
there are people who say that it derives
from the Greek Kurè Kalles, or beautiful
region, and there are people who claim that
the name is derived from the “corsa”,
or rather, the “fligh” that
the poor inhabitants were forced to do following
the continuous attacks of the invaders.
The small seventeenth-century dock is characterized
by its unusual architecture. There is an
interlacement of arcs, steps, “vefi”,
staircases, windows and domes that form
one of the most suggestive agglomerations
of buildings in the whole world.
Here, the choice of the pastel colours is
used above all to delineate different properties.
Corricella is only attainable by sea or
by four stairways that increase the charm
of the place: There are no vehicles here,
but only the voices of the fishermen who
mend the nets on the wharf.
The stairways
of Pennino represent the principal way to
reach the village: The steps are in a Mediterranean
style and suddenly fork creating a kind
of tunnel which makes the route even more
suggestive. This makes everything even more
attractive. The steps begin in front of
the church of St. Rocco or St. Francesco
at the end of the descent from “Piazza
dei Martiri”, a church with only one
aisle and a particular Baroque bell.
From the two extremities of the docks it
is possible to climb back up on either of
the two more recently built flights of stairs:
the “new” stairs that end up
near the Sanctuary of St. Maria delle Grazie
and the stairs of Callìa situated
under the homonym “Belvedere”
- a stupendous terrace from which the island
of Capri and the promontory of Terra Murata
can be admired.
On the other hand, the “dark stairway”
is much more interesting and amusing. It
is positioned in the middle of Via San Rocco.
This is a semi-public staircase covered
by barrel vaults with little windows and
with clearings for the houses situated on
different levels that gives the visitor,
as well as the rest of the village, the
impression they are violating private property.
Corricella is therefore a place that takes
time to describe and which is difficult
to find the right words to describe. One
needs to actually go there, to observe,
and to stay immobile watching this magic
place where the music of silence reigns…
