Procida's visiting card
is the port of Marina Grande, otherwise
known as "Sent'Co", or rather
Sancio Cattolico for the important role
that it once had as a religious pole for
all navigators.
The port of Procida is not a natural port.
It is just the side which is closest to
dry land, upon which the Procidans have
erected their houses of a thousand colours.
In fact, disembarking on the island, one
is confronted with a multicoloured crib
of Mediterranean architecture with Arabic
“influences”, in particular
the imposing crenellated building situated
just in front of the dock of landing.
This is Palazzo Montefusco
(12th century), otherwise known as Palazzo
Catena (Catena=Chain), because of the fact
that once, the road that went through the
gardens united it to its back part - palazzotto
Montefusco. It was also closed off to passers-by
with a chain. Since 1950 this path has been
cut off by the artery of Via Libertà.
Since then, therefore, the procidans have
identified the structure on the port as
“Palazzo Merlato” (“crenellated
building”) and the building situated
on the Canale (Canal) as "Palazzo Catena".
The Canale is an ancient road that connected
the port with the rest of the island it
bear this name, because it once acted as
a drainage duct for rain water. In the Canale,
one can visit the eighteenth-century Palazzo
Rosato with its marvellous architectural
structure and the Church of S. Leonardo
(end of the 16th century) outside which
it is possible to see a votive aedicule
devoted to the Madonna.
The port,
that finishes on both sides in two beaches
with a very clear sea, is around eight hundred
metres long and is protected by about four
cliffs which are also popular destinations
for amateur fishermen and lovers looking
for romantic walks. The first beach, where
there is an ancient stairway that brings
you to the sixteenth-century Tower of Tabaia,
to Casale Vascello and then to Piazza dei
Martiri in Corricella, is called the “Tongue”
or the “Cross” because of the
presence of a big rock of black lava stone
upon which a cross is set in memory of an
ancient shipwreck. The second beach, the
“Le Grotte” (“The Caves")
(because of the numerous caves dug into
the tuff, used as deposits for boats or
as warehouses), is also called the beach
of “Cannone” (cannon) considering
that, a few meters from the beach, there
is a tiny islet where an ancient bombard
is lodged. This acted as a sundial and indicated
to the workers of the nearby boatyard when
it was time to stop and start work by way
of a shot.
Under the houses with the typical arched
windows and under the tall balconies that
look out over the sea (vefi), which are
got to by characteristic staircases with
unique long, narrow ramps, shops selling
paranza fish, businesses, cafés,
restaurants, pubs and pizzerias start to
open, and transform the port from an unloading
point into the most vivacious early-morning
and evening meeting point of the island.
Along the walk, particular attention should
be paid to the two principal religious symbols
for thousands of Procidan seafarers: the
wooden Crucifix, dated 1845, and the Church
of Santa Maria della Pietà, erected
in 1760 upon a 7th century chapel, also
called Chiesa dei Marinai (Church of the
Sailors) because it was founded by the “Pio
Monte dei Marinai”, an association
for the assistance of the sailors and their
families.
The beautiful,
great piazza in front of the Church, host
of almost all the folkloristic events of
the island, represents the border between
the commercial port and the tourist port.
Here you can catch sight of the island's
only cinema, which is ultramodern. The Procida
Hall and the glorious nautical institute
"Francesco Caracciolo" (the most
ancient in Europe, it being 170 years old)
in which one can find the Museum of Sea.
A few meters before, at number 10, there
was the "Victory Hotel" that had
as one of its guests Alphonse de Lamartine,
the author of the novel Graziella, who was
the heroin daughter of procidan fishermen,
and which has become a typical image of
the beauty of the island.
